Texas Longhorn Wagon Tours & Safaris in Charters Towers

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Texas Longhorn Wagon Tours & Safaris in Charters Towers, just a short drive from Townsville. This hidden gem, nestled in the backyard of North Queensland, offers a unique and unforgettable adventure that I highly recommend to all readers, especially our vibrant Australian Indian community.

A Warm Welcome and Historical Insights

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the warm smiles of Michael ‘Mick’ and Lynda Bethel, the founders of this exceptional tourist destination. Their passion for cattle breeding and the Australian bush was evident from the moment we stepped onto their 1100-acre property, Leahton Park. Our adventure began at the ‘Wagon Wheel’ dining shed, where we enjoyed a captivating video presentation about the fascinating history of the Texas Longhorn breed. This engaging introduction, set against the backdrop of the picturesque North Queensland landscape, set the stage for an exciting journey ahead.

Easy Access and Ample Parking

Conveniently located just 10km from Charters Towers, with all-weather sealed access, Leahton Park is easily accessible for visitors. There is ample parking available for all sizes of vehicles, including caravans and mobile homes, making it a hassle-free destination for a family day trip or a longer stay.

Up Close and Personal with Texas Longhorns

The highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the Texas Longhorn Safari. We boarded the Polaris Rangers, easy-access vehicles that allowed us to get up close and personal with the magnificent Texas Longhorns. These majestic animals, with their impressive horns and gentle dispositions, are a sight to behold. The thrill of driving one of the Safari Rangers added an extra layer of excitement to the experience. As we traversed the sprawling property, we encountered not only the Texas Longhorns but also Asian Water Buffalo, American Bison, Mexican Sardo Negro, African Ankole Watusi, and Scottish Highland cattle. This diverse bovine experience offered a glimpse into the rich tapestry of cattle breeds and their histories.

Traditional Aussie Smoko

After the safari, we returned to the homestead for a traditional Aussie smoko. The tea, brewed the old-fashioned way in vintage enamel teapots with Bushells ‘Blue Label’ tea leaves, was a delightful treat. Home-cooked Anzac bikkies and pecan slice, baked by the Bethels’ Aunt, were simply delicious. For those preferring cooler refreshments, juice and cold water were also available. This charming morning tea under the big shade trees was a perfect way to relax and reflect on the day’s adventures.

Longhorn Love Shack Tour

Our journey continued with the Longhorn Love Shack Tour, where we learned about the intricate breeding process of the Texas Longhorns and saw the specially designed cattle working facilities. Mick and Lynda’s dedication and expertise in cattle breeding were truly inspiring, and their love for what they do shone through every word.

JR Gallery of Horns

A visit to the JR Gallery of Horns was a moving experience. Although Johnny Reb (JR), the longest-horned Texas Longhorn in Australia, is no longer alive, his magnificent horns have been preserved and displayed in this brand-new addition. Measuring an astounding 10 feet 4 inches from tip to tip (3.15 meters), JR’s horns are a testament to the grandeur of these incredible animals. The gallery also features other fascinating items, including an 1880’s replica Texas Trail herd saddle made at the Bethel Saddlery.

Horns & Hides Gift Shop

Before leaving, we browsed the Horns & Hides Gift Shop and Saddlery. The shop offers a range of unique souvenirs and Texas Longhorn products, providing the perfect memento of our visit. The atmosphere at Leahton Park was so captivating that leaving was the hardest part of our journey.
