Lucky day weddings: Couples celebrate on the eighth of August

The eighth day of the eighth month is a day of great significance for many, particularly within the Chinese community, who consider this date one of the luckiest of the year. Today, couples across the State are embracing the auspicious date to begin their new lives together, with 23 couples choosing to marry at the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (the Registry).

In Chinese culture, the number eight symbolises abundance, prosperity, and success, making the eighth of August a popular choice for weddings. This belief has drawn a significant number of couples to the Registry’s Pyrmont venue, where they will exchange vows on this auspicious day. The Registry’s new Pyrmont location, with its modern design and scenic views over Pyrmont Bay, provides a picturesque setting for these special ceremonies.

Today’s ceremonies are set to more than double the usual number of weddings held at the Registry, highlighting the appeal of celebrating a lucky date in a beautiful yet affordable setting. The Pyrmont venue will be adorned with fresh red florals, symbolising luck and good fortune, arranged throughout the two private Terrumi rooms. The word “Terrumi” translates to ‘always’ and ‘forever’ in the local Aboriginal language, adding a touch of local heritage to the celebrations.

The Pyrmont Registry, with its stunning backdrop of parklands, water, and contemporary architecture, offers an effortless and elegant environment for couples to celebrate their special day. The cost-effectiveness of Registry weddings, starting from $479, contrasts sharply with the average Australian wedding cost of $36,000, making it an attractive option for those seeking a more intimate and budget-friendly celebration.

NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages Registrar Theresa Fairman emphasised the unique charm of these ceremonies. “The Registry wedding rooms overlook Pyrmont Bay and will be decorated with beautiful red fresh florals to make the couples’ lucky day even more special,” she said. “We all know how expensive weddings can be, and a wedding with the Registry offers couples their dream day at a price that won’t break the bank.”

For those looking to create lasting memories on their special day, the NSW Registry offers a delightful and economical alternative to traditional, high-cost weddings. Couples can register their wedding at this stunning venue and celebrate the eighth of August as a day of luck and love. Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.
