The Allan Labor Government has launched two new initiatives aimed at empowering women from diverse backgrounds to achieve their leadership aspirations. With applications now open, these programs are designed to support culturally diverse women throughout Victoria in their pursuit of leadership roles.
Minister for Women Natalie Hutchins announced the opening of applications for the Women of Colour Executive Leadership Program, which has received a substantial $180,000 investment from the Labor Government. This program is a significant part of the government’s efforts to ensure that gender does not limit anyone’s opportunities in education, career advancement, financial security, or health.
Recognising the unique challenges faced by women of colour, the Women of Colour Executive Leadership Program offers practical support for women working across various sectors, including not-for-profit and community organisations, the corporate world, and the Victorian Public Service. The 2024 program will assist 16 women in overcoming these barriers through a series of workshops, mentoring sessions, and coaching.
Previous participants of the program, such as Arshin Zaman, an engineer committed to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in her field, and Lama Tiavo, a manager in private sector consultancy focusing on commercial strategies nationwide, highlight the program’s impact.
The Labor Government, noted for introducing gender-responsive budgeting in 2021, continues to champion initiatives that create fair opportunities for women and girls. These efforts aim to foster an environment where all women, regardless of their cultural background, can thrive and lead.

Minister for Women Natalie Hutchins emphasised, “We’re breaking down barriers for women of all backgrounds by giving them access to tangible programs that drive real change across every sector in Victoria.”
Minister for Multicultural Affairs Ingrid Stitt added, “Having culturally diverse leadership enables organisations to get the best outcomes. This program will unlock the potential of women across a variety of sectors to step into or continue their leadership journey.”

Support Independent Community Journalism
Dear Reader,The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.
We operate independently.
Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.
When you support The Indian Sun, you support:
• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers
We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.
