Siona Fernandes, a former sportsperson who has transitioned into an academic researcher, is reaching out to the Indian community in Australia. She is inviting them to contribute to a pioneering study that examines the cultural impacts on sport and physical activity among Indian migrants before and after their relocation to Australia. This initiative is part of her PhD research at AUT University, New Zealand.
The project, titled ‘Exploring contexts and experiences of sport and physical activity before and after migration among Indian migrants in Australia,’ aims to provide detailed insights into the participation patterns in sports and recreational activities of Indians within the Australian cultural milieu. The study is particularly focused on understanding how social and cultural dynamics shape the engagement with physical activities, which can often play a crucial role in integration and personal wellbeing.
Participation in this research is open to individuals who meet specific criteria, ensuring a targeted and relevant sample group. Eligible participants are those who were born in India or have at least one Indian-born parent, are between the ages of 18 and 70, have lived in India for at least one year over their lifetime, and have been residing in Australia for a minimum of one year.
The survey is designed to be completed online, which offers both convenience and confidentiality, requiring only about 15-20 minutes of your time. The anonymity of the responses ensures that personal data and insights remain secure, encouraging open and honest participation.
Fernandes emphasises the value and importance of each response, stating that the input from the community is vital in building a comprehensive understanding of the factors that influence physical activity among Indian migrants. This research is not just an academic pursuit but a stepping stone towards enhancing community health and integration strategies through tailored sports and recreation programs.
By participating in this study, Indian migrants have a unique opportunity to contribute to a deeper understanding of how migration influences lifestyle changes, particularly in the context of physical activity. This could potentially guide future policies and programs aimed at improving the quality of life and physical wellbeing of the migrant community.
