Singapore pulls Everest Fish Curry Masala off shelves over pesticide concerns

Singapore has initiated a recall of the Everest Fish Curry Masala, a widely favoured spice mix imported from India, following a warning that it contains unsafe levels of ethylene oxide. This action was prompted by a notice from the Centre for Food Safety in Hong Kong, which detected the pesticide at levels exceeding what is considered safe.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) responded swiftly to the alert from Hong Kong by instructing Sp Muthiah & Sons Pte. Ltd., the importer of the product, to undertake a comprehensive recall. The focus of concern is ethylene oxide, a chemical commonly employed in agriculture for fumigation purposes to reduce microbial contamination. However, its use in food products is strictly forbidden.

While the regulations in Singapore allow the use of ethylene oxide for sterilising spices, the amount found in the Everest Fish Curry Masala exceeded the safe levels, posing a significant health risk to consumers. This has led the SFA to take preventive measures to ensure public safety.

Ethylene oxide’s primary application is in sterilising medical equipment and spices, where it helps eliminate bacteria and other pathogens without leaving harmful residues. However, when used inappropriately or in excessive amounts, it can pose serious health risks. The potential danger of ethylene oxide includes its classification as a carcinogen by several international health agencies, highlighting the critical nature of its controlled use.

In their statement, the SFA advised consumers who have used the product and are concerned about their health to seek medical advice. Additionally, they have provided avenues for consumers to contact their point of purchase for further enquiries regarding the recall.

The situation is still developing, as Everest, the brand responsible for the Fish Curry Masala, has yet to release an official statement regarding the recall. The delay in communication from the company has left many consumers seeking answers about the implications of the contamination and the measures being taken to address the issue.

The recall of the Everest Fish Curry Masala underscores the stringent standards required in food safety and the need for constant vigilance to ensure that all products comply with these standards, thus safeguarding consumer health. Although the product has been recalled in Singapore, it remains available on shelves in Australia, with no recall initiated as of yet. This situation highlights the global interconnectedness of food safety protocols and the critical importance of prompt action and international cooperation to mitigate potential health risks.
