In a cinematic tribute to one of Indian football’s most influential figures, actor Ajay Devgn steps into the shoes of coach Syed Abdul Rahim in the upcoming sports biopic Maidaan.

Directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma, the film delves into the golden era of Indian football from 1952 to 1962, chronicling the life and journey of Rahim, whose leadership revolutionised the sport in India.

Rahim, celebrated as the mastermind behind the modernisation of Indian football, led the national team through a series of triumphs, including securing two gold medals in the 1951 and 1962 Asian Games.

Additionally, under his guidance, the Indian team made history by becoming Asia’s first football team to qualify for the Semi Finals of the 1956 Summer Olympics.

Maidaan portrays the challenges, sacrifices, and victorious moments of Rahim and his underdog team, highlighting their struggle to overcome societal obstacles and make a mark on the global stage. The film aims to capture the essence of Rahim’s determination, leadership, and vision that made him an iconic figure in Indian sports history.

For noted actor Gajraj Rao, who portrays the character of Roy Chowdhury, Maidaan has been a four-year journey.

Reflecting on the experience, Rao emphassed the film’s broader message of societal harmony and resilience in the face of adversity. He noted that Maidaan isn’t merely a sports film but a human story depicting how Rahim, amidst extreme negativity, managed to lead a diverse team and his family, imparting valuable lessons along the way. Maidaan hits cinemas across Australia on 10 April, promising audiences a captivating cinematic experience that celebrates the legacy of one of Indian football’s greatest icons.
