The Andrews Labor Government is reaffirming its commitment to the international student community and the continued strength of the economy by hosting the first-ever Careers Fair specifically designed for international students in Melbourne.

Today, Minister for Trade and Investment, Tim Pallas, paid a visit to the Study Melbourne International Student Careers Fair, a groundbreaking event co-organized with SEEK, aimed at bridging the gap between international students and potential employers.

The Careers Fair witnessed participation from over 30 exhibitors, including prominent names like Swisse, SEEK, and Bupa, along with valuable support from the Commonwealth Government in addressing visa-related queries.

The initiative aligns with last year’s launch of the International Education Recovery Plan 2025, which outlines the Labor Government’s vision for the growth of the sector. A central focus of this plan is to create meaningful post-study employment opportunities for international students and graduates while nurturing their talent.

Furthermore, the Government is actively promoting the “Commitment to Action to Improve Employment Outcomes for International Students,” accompanied by a customized search function on SEEK to help international students secure professional graduate roles within their field of study.

The “Commitment to Action” encourages employers to publicly pledge their commitment to hiring more international students, providing work experience opportunities, setting employment targets, eliminating barriers to employability, and sharing success stories. To date, 25 employers, including industry leaders like Swisse, Indonesian tech unicorn Bukalapak, e-Centric, The Lyon Group, and Marriot International, have endorsed this commitment.

International students seeking graduate opportunities on SEEK can now use the hashtag #MelbourneStudentCareers to access job listings that align with their area of study from participating employers.

These forward-thinking organizations recognize the value of employing international student graduates, which not only enriches their talent pool but also fosters an internationally oriented and culturally diverse workforce.

Furthermore, international students often pursue studies in fields closely aligned with priority industry sectors currently experiencing significant workforce shortages, such as infrastructure, the green economy, and medical and allied health.

Melbourne, which has held the title of Australia’s best student city since 2015, continues to attract a growing number of international students. Currently, there are more than 140,000 student visa holders in Victoria, making international education the state’s largest services export, supporting over 40,000 jobs.
