There is an adage that says, “If you want to understand a man, walk a mile in his shoes.” Darren, the affable owner and manager of BOQ Aitkenvale and a former professional sportsman, has traversed the miles in banking and sports, understanding and appreciating the unique sensibilities of his multicultural town, Townsville.

Since his transition from a Business Banking Manager to owner of the Aitkenvale branch in 2022, Darren has pursued a singular vision, a mission instilled during his time at BOQ’s: delivering outcomes that matter for local people. “I was incredibly impressed with the bank’s focus on delivering outcomes for local people,” Darren reveals. That earnest commitment to the local community served as a catalyst for him to take over the branch, providing a bespoke touch to banking in a town that thrives on its multicultural fabric.

Darren’s leadership in BOQ Aitkenvale shines brightly when he talks about the support his branch provides to small businesses, especially in a city that celebrates its cultural diversity. “The main advantage is that they will be dealing with someone who is also in business and aware of the challenges we face having your own business,” he says. Notably, Darren stresses the importance of face-to-face interactions over impersonal phone calls, a feature that has become somewhat of a rarity in the modern banking world.

For first-time homebuyers, the process can be daunting, but Darren and his team aim to alleviate these concerns. “Talk to someone as soon as you can so you can get an idea on where you need to be financially to get to your goals,” he advises. His approach to business and residential loans draws from the ethos of personalised guidance, a testament to his customer-centric philosophy.

What is unique about Darren is his ability to blend his experiences from disparate worlds: the cricket pitch and the banking hall. A cricket enthusiast and coach of a local team owned by Girish Basavaraj, Darren has been successful in leveraging the universal love for cricket, especially among the Indian diaspora, as a tool for fostering stronger community bonds.

Despite the multicultural nature of Townsville, Darren acknowledges the challenges in swaying customers towards exploring alternatives to the Big Four. “The Major Four banks have a huge presence and people have always banked with them so that is where they go when wanting a loan,” he says. But his counteroffer is compelling: BOQ Aitkenvale promises to be a place where individuals can discuss their needs without getting lost in the impersonal labyrinth of large banking institutions.

The spirit of community service runs deep in Darren’s blood, extending beyond the walls of his branch. Whether it is sponsoring local sporting teams or providing Aitkenvale Primary Schools Community Hub with sewing machines, Darren’s focus remains rooted in serving the people of Townsville.

His style of leadership bears imprints of his sporting background. The camaraderie of a cricket team, the drive to push oneself on biking trails, and the need for unified efforts, all have influenced how he leads his team. “I like to have fun but understand that the team needs everyone pulling in the right direction to achieve what we want to,” he shares.

Darren envisions a future for banking where the personal touch won’t be lost in the digital transformation. He believes that while digital banking offers undeniable convenience, there remains a considerable segment of the population who appreciate the value of a familiar face to turn to during adverse situations.

His mantra is simple: be there for the customers, build relationships and serve the community. Darren’s story reflects a perfect blend of resilience, adaptability, and commitment to community service, making him not just a banker but a true asset to the vibrant, multicultural town of Townsville. It is safe to say that Darren isn’t just managing a branch—he’s curating a community.
