The music director duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal, popularly known as LP, are household names in India and one of the most successful composers in Bollywood history. They have composed music for approximately 750 Hindi movies, working with almost all notable filmmakers, including Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, and singers such as Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, and Mohammad Rafi. They have received 7 awards and 25 nominations for the Best Music category at the Filmfare Awards.

On April 22, 2023, a Laxmikant-Pyarelal concert was organised at Hillsong Convention Centre, Sydney, where the audience was taken down the memory lane and transported into a world of nostalgic music from the 60s to the 90s era.

The concert was successfully organised by Rohit Trivedi of Sahyog Entertainment and Manjit Chopra of FAME events, with Sahyog Entertainment as the national promoters of the concert.

The legendary Pyarelalji himself was on stage, sans his partner, Lakshmikant (who died of renal failure in 1998). Pyarelalji conducted his original orchestra of 20+ musicians, to the thrill of the audience, with an enthusiastic sense of humour and twinkle in his eyes.

Pyarelalji was accompanied by his troop of renowned singers, including Kavita Krishnamurti, Amit Kumar, Sudesh Bhosle, and a crop of talented and upcoming singers, namely Priyanka Mitra, Mohammed Salamat, and Neelanjana Ray. Veteran singers Kavita Krishnamurti, Amit Kumar, and Sudesh Bhosle need no introduction. Most of us have grown up listening to their songs. Priyanka Mitra (of the Indian Idol fame) is a known name in the classical music circle. Neelanjana Ray (of the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa fame) is a rising star, and Mohammed Salamat has sung a number of popular Bollywood songs.

The singers paid tribute to the late Lakshmikantji and sang countless numbers of hit songs from the LP stable, such as “Choli ke peechey kya hai,” “Satyam Shivam Sundaram,” “Ek pyar ka nagma hai,” and many more.

Sudesh Bhosle had the audience constantly in stitches with his mimicry of actors. Amit Kumar, son of Kishore Kumar, kept the audience entertained with his antics. The performances from Priyanka Mitra, Neelanjana Ray and Mohammed Salamat were superb. The sound system and stage lighting added to the exuberant mood in the hall. The compere, Ms Kavya, conducted the proceedings in a very elegant manner.

When the “Jumma chumma de de” song was sung, the hall went crazy, with everyone getting up on their feet and scorching the floor by dancing.

The show ended on a great note with all the singers gathering on the stage and singing a medley of LP hit songs.

It was time to get off the time machine and return to 2023.
