Four Year 12 students from Townsville Grammar School have taken a proactive approach to address the issue of racial bullying. Sangweon Yun, Evangelos Yiallourides, Adimabu Noah, and Saachi Hira, hailing from South Korea, Greek-Cypriot, Torres Strait Islander, and Indian heritages respectively, approached the school to hold a Multicultural Day event aimed at promoting acceptance of diversity instead of discrimination and bullying. The event was held on 17 March 2023, as part of the school’s annual Bullying Awareness Week and was attended by more than a dozen different cultures.

The event was a resounding success, with students and community groups showcasing traditional performances and selling traditional food to fundraise for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The Multicultural Day team raised over $4,000 to support refugees globally, through the Celebration and earlier car-wash fundraisers.

The team expressed their gratitude to Mrs. Meera Sivayoganathan from North Queensland Hindu Community Inc for providing delicious food for the Indian Food stall and facilitating a beautiful performance of traditional Odissi dance performance by Mrs Suchismita Mishra and flute playing by Mr Patel. They also thanked Mrs. Geetha Sadagopan for her contribution in bringing some of her Geetha’s Natyalaya students to perform at the Multicultural Celebration.

The event was an opportunity for students to learn about different cultures and engage in a positive way, fostering a sense of understanding and acceptance. By promoting diversity and combatting racial bullying, the students at Townsville Grammar School are leading the way towards a more inclusive and tolerant society.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. With platforms such as YouTube videos, we have been able to engage in different forms of storytelling. However, the past few years, like many media organisations around the world, it has not been an easy path. We have a greater challenge. We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution. Do make a DONATION NOW so we can continue with the volume and quality journalism that we are able to practice.

Thank you for your support.

Best wishes,
Team The Indian Sun
