Victorian Refugee Awards Recognise Achievements and Contributions of New Arrivals
The Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC) has announced the opening of nominations for the 2023 Victorian Refugee Awards, with the goal of recognising and promoting the achievements and contributions of those who have arrived in Australia as refugees or asylum seekers.
According to VMC Chairperson Vivienne Nguyen, “The VMC is proud to coordinate the 2023 Victorian Refugee Awards, and I encourage you to nominate someone you know with lived-experience as a refugee or asylum seeker.” Deputy Chairperson Bwe Thay, who arrived in Australia as a refugee himself, adds that “Refugees and asylum seekers are passionate and dedicated contributors to our state, and they deserve to be recognized for their unique stories, achievements and contributions.”
Multiple awards will be presented across four categories: Achievement, Leadership, Youth Leadership and Business, honoring those who have excelled through study, work, entrepreneurship or volunteering in Victoria. The awards serve not only to recognize individual achievements but also to raise awareness of the contributions made by refugees and asylum seekers to the state.
Nominations are now open and will close on Tuesday, 14 March 2023 at 11:59 PM. With over 100 million people globally having been forced to flee their homes due to persecution, Victoria is home to many who have not only begun new lives, but excelled personally and professionally, and supported others in need. The Victorian Refugee Awards provide an opportunity for the community to come together to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of these individuals.

Support Independent Community Journalism
Dear Reader,The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.
We operate independently.
Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.
When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
