Sharmini Subramaniam
22 May 1978 - 12 December 2019

Sharmini Subramaniam, principal lawyer at Aitken Partners, passed away on 12 December at her home in Perth. She was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

Sharmini was born and brought up in Perth to parents of Sri Lankan ancestry. A trip to visit her brother who was studying in Melbourne eight years ago turned out to be a life-changing decision. Six weeks after that trip, she found herself packing her bags and heading for Melbourne to start a new job.

“Australia has been good to my family,” Sharmini had always said.

For someone who was not fully sold on the idea of becoming a lawyer, Subramaniam did really well for herself and was a Principal with Aitken Partners and headed the Family Law Team as well as the South Asian Focus Team. “I like dealing with people. I like the interaction. There are not many areas where you can work so closely with people and help them with such a difficult period in their lives,” she told The Indian Sun, in an earlier interview.

Sharmini’s funeral will be held at 8 am on 17 December at 2 Francisco Crescent, Bull Creek, Perth.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. With platforms such as YouTube videos, we have been able to engage in different forms of storytelling. However, the past few years, like many media organisations around the world, it has not been an easy path. We have a greater challenge. We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution. Do make a DONATION NOW so we can continue with the volume and quality journalism that we are able to practice.

Thank you for your support.

Best wishes,
Team The Indian Sun
