Hypnosis is a pleasant physical and mental state of relaxation that allows the conscious mind to relax and sit in the passenger seat, while the subconscious takes the driver’s seat.
When you are in a hypnotic state, you can feel any or all of the following:
– Deeply relaxed
– Without a care in the world
– Reduced critical function
– A light floaty or dreamy feeling
– Heightened imagination and ability to feel things
– A loss of sense of time
– A sense of deep focusing, sometimes likened to tunnel vision
– Deeply receptive to suggestions that resonate with you
What you WON’T feel:
– Like you have no control
– Like your will has been taken over by the therapist
– That you might do things you wouldn’t normally do
Can anyone be hypnotised?
Some people worry that they can’t be hypnotised. The reality is that being hypnotised does not generally look like it does on TV or on stage.
The most recent research indicates that everyone is capable of experiencing a hypnotic state of varying depth and that a deep trance is not necessary in order for hypnotherapy to be beneficial.
It also shows that although people start out with different levels of hypnotisability, hypnotic ability increase as your experience of hypnosis does. People who are familiar with meditation or being in “flow” while doing a particular activity (for example painting, knitting, sport) and people who are imaginative, will find the hypnotic state easier to enter into and more familiar.
What is hypnotherapy?
Using hypnosis as a valuable tool, I will use hypnotherapy—the application of therapeutic suggestions, stories and metaphors individually and uniquely tailored for you—to directly speak to your subconscious and create change where your conscious efforts have not succeeded.
The benefit of hypnotherapy over straight therapy is that the hypnotherapist bypasses the critical mind and directly targets habits, behaviours and ways of thinking and doing things that are embedded in the subconscious. This is why habits and behaviours that you KNOW are bad for you, but you can’t seem to stop, like smoking, drinking too much or not doing any physical exercise, can be targeted and stopped by using hypnotherapy.
