Victorian Coalition Government hoping to build healthier Victoria through world-class cardiac care closer to home

World class cardiac services will be delivered from Sunshine Hospital for the first time thanks to a $10.68 million Victorian Coalition Government funding boost. Visiting Sunshine Hospital 6 July, Minister for Health David Davis said construction would start on the hospital’s new state-of-the-art cardiology services in September.

“The Coalition Government recognises the increasing demand for cardiology services at Western Health,” Mr Davis said.

Mr Davis said that in May 2013, the Coalition Government invested $15.1 million in the Sunshine Hospital, to deliver additional critical care services, five extra labour delivery rooms and the space for a future interventional cardiology service. “Heart disease remains a major killer here in Victoria, claiming almost 7,300 lives every year, and we are fortunate to have access to some of the best cardiac services in the country. This major funding boost will ensure more residents living in Melbourne’s west will be able to access these world leading cardiac services, closer to home, from next year,” he added.

Mr Davis said the new cardiology facility at Sunshine Hospital will include a cardiac catheter laboratory and specialised coronary care unit for cardiac procedures, a second CT scanner and digital angiography facilities. He added that the angiography facilities will feature new technology that will enable Western Health to treat paediatric cardiac patients for the first time.

Mr Davis said that in another first for Melbourne’s west, the cardiac service will include an electrophysiology lab where patients with an irregular heartbeat can be tested, diagnosed and treated.

Mr Davis said the Coalition Government was building a healthier Victoria with more than $4.5 billion of capital investment underway in health services across the state, including the Sunshine Hospital expansion.

“We have also significantly boosted funding for Western Health, with its funding increased by 27 per cent since 2009/10 to $492.39 million in 2013/14,” he added.
