A

gathering at Victoria’s Parliament this week brought together politicians, diplomats and community leaders with a shared message — that peace begins with conscience.

Held in Queen’s Hall, the “Call for Conscience” event marked the launch of the Australia chapter of the United Global Peace Foundation (UGPF). Around 100 guests attended, representing a mix of cultural groups, organisations and public office on Friday.

The evening began with a welcome from Yogesh Bhatt, founder of the Vivekanand Society of Australia, who also hosted the event. He spoke about the need for compassion and dialogue in an increasingly divided world.

A ceremonial lighting of the lamp, led by UGPF chairman Meghraj Singh Royal along with dignitaries, set the tone for the evening. A Ganesh Vandana performance by the Rhythmica Dance Group followed.

Speaking at the event, Gabrielle Williams MP highlighted the importance of community-led efforts in building harmony.

“Peace is strengthened when communities come together with mutual respect and shared purpose,” she said.

Evan Mulholland MP also backed such initiatives, saying strong societies are built on understanding and cooperation. Federal MP Rob Mitchell echoed the sentiment, adding that lasting harmony depends on values-driven leadership.

The event also introduced the leadership team for UGPF Australia, with Chandra Shekhar Singh Chauhan as president, supported by Ranjan Rana (vice president), Virender Singh Shekhawat (secretary), Jitender Singh (treasurer) and Major Anirudh Singh (retired) as public officer.

Representing the Indian Consulate, Hemant Kumar Pandey spoke about the role of cultural connections and education in strengthening ties between communities.

In his keynote address, UGPF director Dr Vikrant Singh Tomar urged people to bring ethical responsibility into everyday decision-making.

“Peace begins with conscience,” he said. “When individuals act with integrity, societies change.”

Meghraj Singh Royal was also honoured during the evening for his work in promoting global peace. He said Australia’s diversity places it in a strong position to lead by example.

The program included cultural performances, including a peace-themed dance by Rhythmica and a presentation of “Satyam Shivam Sundaram” by Parul Kulshrestha, blending artistic expression with the event’s message of unity.

Among those present were several Victorian MPs, councillors and community representatives, reflecting the broad support for the initiative.

The evening concluded with the Melbourne Declaration, a statement committing attendees to promoting peace, dialogue and ethical engagement, followed by a vote of thanks and informal networking.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.
