Stephen Moir has been appointed as the new chair of the State Training Board, taking on a key role in shaping Western Australia’s vocational education and training priorities.
The appointment was announced by Amber-Jade Sanderson, who said Mr Moir’s industry experience would help ensure the state’s training system stays closely connected to workforce needs.
Mr Moir has been a member of the State Training Board since 2019 and is currently group chief executive officer of the Motor Trade Association of Western Australia. He has led the organisation for more than a decade, overseeing workforce and training initiatives across the automotive sector.
His earlier roles include serving as managing director of the Small Business Development Corporation.
The State Training Board advises the Western Australian Government on vocational education and training policy, apprenticeships, traineeships and workforce planning. The board also works with industry groups and training providers to identify areas of demand and support future job creation.
Mr Moir said he would focus on strengthening ties between industry and training providers, while supporting apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities across the state.
The state government has placed increasing emphasis on workforce development as Western Australia faces demand for skilled workers across construction, energy, mining and manufacturing.
The government has also highlighted the need for training systems to support its ambitions around renewable energy and local industry development.
Outgoing chair Jim Walker was thanked for his service after more than a decade on the board.
Mr Walker joined the board in 2014 and was credited with helping improve links between industry and training providers, while also supporting apprenticeship programs and long-term workforce planning.
Brooke Fowles has also joined the board. She currently serves as director of strategy and governance at the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia.
Her background includes work across policy, strategy and organisational reform in both the public sector and essential services.
Existing board members Lena Constantine and Debra Zanella have been reappointed until the end of 2028.
Ms Sanderson said Mr Moir’s experience working across business, industry and training would help guide the board during a period of workforce change.
She said Western Australia’s future economic plans would rely heavily on building a skilled workforce and ensuring training opportunities match industry demand.
