A new campaign aimed at promoting fairness and inclusion in football was launched this week at Parliament House, Melbourne, bringing together state MPs and leaders from across the sport.

Representatives from Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City FC joined officials from Football Victoria to unveil the “Level the Playing Field” campaign during a gathering that also included members of the Parliamentary Friends of Football group.

Victorian MP Jaclyn Symes said the event offered an opportunity for lawmakers to hear directly from football administrators about the priorities shaping the sport’s future in the state.

Football remains one of the most widely played sports in Victoria, with strong participation across grassroots clubs and community leagues. Officials say the campaign focuses on creating fair opportunities within the sport while supporting communities that see football as a shared cultural connection.

Speakers at the launch highlighted the role football plays in bringing together people from different backgrounds. With players and supporters representing many cultures, the sport has long acted as a meeting point for communities across Melbourne and regional areas.

Football Victoria used the event to outline its goals for the years ahead, including continued investment in participation, facilities and pathways for players at all levels. The organisation works with clubs, volunteers and local associations across the state to support both amateur and professional football.

While the campaign centres on unity through sport, it also reflects ongoing conversations around access, participation and equality within football. Advocates say community support and cooperation between sporting bodies and government will be important as the initiatives move forward.

Events such as the parliamentary launch offer football leaders a platform to connect with policymakers and share the experiences of players, volunteers and supporters who form the backbone of the game across Victoria.

For many involved in the sport, the message behind the campaign is straightforward. Football continues to bring people together, whether on local pitches or at major stadiums, and organisers hope the initiative will help strengthen that connection across the state.
