Families across Victoria are receiving fresh cost-of-living support at the school gate this term, with increased assistance through the Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund alongside the opening of 19 new government schools across the state.
Kororoit MP Luba Grigorovitch marked the start of term by confirming the fund is now available, with payments increased for eligible students. The support helps families cover the cost of camps, sporting programs, excursions and other core school activities that form part of everyday school life.
More than 190,000 eligible students are supported by the fund each year. From 2026, eligible students will receive $400 annually, up from $154 for primary students and $256 for secondary students. The assistance applies to families at both government and non-government schools who need support most.
Education Minister Ben Carroll said the funding was aimed at keeping students connected to school life. “We’re funding practical cost-of-living help while making sure no child misses out on things that make school fun,” he said.
The start of term also marks a milestone for Victoria’s school building program, with 19 new schools welcoming students this week. The openings increase enrolment capacity by more than 11,000 places, the largest number of new schools to open in a single year in the state’s history.

Grigorovitch joined families in Truganina to welcome students to the newly opened Mindalk Primary School, one of the 19 sites opening their doors. “The first day of school is always a milestone to celebrate, but this year is very special—because we’re opening a brand new school for families in Truganina delivered by the Allan Labor Government,” she said.
Carroll said the openings fulfilled a key commitment. “By opening 19 new schools this week, we’ve delivered on our commitment to build 100 new schools by 2026,” he said.
Since 2019, Victoria has delivered 100 new government schools and completed more than 2,300 school upgrades, creating capacity for over 92,000 additional students. Construction has also begun on two further schools scheduled to open in 2027, as growth continues in fast-developing areas.
The expanded Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund and the latest round of school openings arrive as families continue to face pressure from rising everyday costs, with education expenses a growing concern for many households across the state.
