Malaysia Airlines has entered into a new partnership with Mumbai Indians, becoming the Indian Premier League franchise’s Associate Sponsor and Official Global Airline Partner, as the carrier looks to strengthen its footprint in the Indian market.
The agreement is part of Malaysia Airlines’ broader strategy to expand brand visibility and commercial reach through sport, with India identified as a key growth market for the national carrier.
The partnership was launched in Mumbai with a cultural event at Jio World Gardens, where 100 traditional Wau Bulan kites were released to coincide with Makar Sankranti, India’s annual kite-flying festival. Mumbai Indians Head Coach Mahela Jayawardene attended the event along with senior club representatives.
Mumbai Indians are among the most widely followed cricket teams in the world, with a global fan base estimated at more than 55 million. Malaysia Airlines said the collaboration would allow it to engage cricket audiences in India and internationally, while reinforcing cultural links between the two countries.
Malaysia Aviation Group Managing Director Datuk Captain Izham Ismail said India remained central to the airline’s international operations, with 80 weekly flights connecting 10 Indian cities.
He said the partnership was a strategic investment aimed at strengthening brand preference in a highly competitive aviation market, while supporting tourism and trade flows between India and Malaysia.
A spokesperson for Mumbai Indians said the franchise was pleased to partner with Malaysia Airlines, describing the collaboration as an opportunity to connect fans with new travel experiences while celebrating sport and culture.
Under the agreement, Malaysia Airlines and Mumbai Indians will roll out a series of joint fan engagement initiatives, including matchday activations, co-branded experiences and selected player appearances, designed to extend fan interaction beyond the cricket season.
The airline will also continue promoting its Bonus Side Trip programme, which allows eligible international passengers transiting through Kuala Lumpur International Airport to add a domestic Malaysian destination to their itinerary at no additional airfare, excluding taxes. Travellers can choose from eight destinations across the country.
Malaysia Airlines said the partnership also aligns with its support for Visit Malaysia 2026, an initiative aimed at boosting inbound tourism and strengthening regional connectivity.
