Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a request to the Governor-General for the establishment of a Special Honours List to recognise the extraordinary courage and selflessness shown during the recent terrorist attack at Bondi Beach on 14 December 2025.
The tragic incident at Bondi Beach, which shocked the nation and the world, exposed the darkest side of humanity—marked by hatred, antisemitism, and senseless violence. Yet amid this tragedy, Australians witnessed remarkable acts of heroism and compassion.
“In the face of danger, ordinary people ran towards harm, risking their own safety to help others simply because it was the right thing to do,” said Prime Minister Albanese on Christmas eve. “Their bravery and kindness stand as a powerful testament to the resilience and spirit of our community.”
The proposed Special Honours List will recognise individuals who are nominated and recommended for bravery or meritorious service awards under the Australian Honours and Awards system, acknowledging their actions during and in the immediate aftermath of the attack.
Special Honours Lists have been previously established following major national tragedies, such as the Bali bombings in 2002 and the MH17 disaster in 2014, serving as a meaningful way to formally honour those who have gone above and beyond in times of crisis.
Pending approval, these awards will be announced in 2026, ensuring that the courage displayed by many Australians during this harrowing event is appropriately acknowledged and remembered.
