An international student has been hospitalised following a violent attack on Saturday night in the heart of Adelaide, prompting concerns over racial targeting and police inaction.
Charanpreet Singh, a student currently living in Adelaide, was allegedly attacked by five men wielding what appeared to be metal knuckles or sharp objects near Kintore Avenue around 9.22pm on 19 July. The incident occurred while he was out with his wife to see the city’s light displays.
According to statements shared by those at the scene, Singh had just parked his car and was still near the vehicle when a group of men emerged from another car and began assaulting him without provocation. Witnesses who were present told police that the attack was unprovoked and appeared to be racially motivated.
The assailants allegedly yelled “F*** off Indian” before fleeing the scene, leaving Singh injured on the road. Emergency services were called, and he was taken by ambulance to Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Police did attend the scene and reportedly took statements from both Singh and bystanders. However, friends of the victim say officers advised Singh to return and give a formal statement later when he felt better, without confirming whether charges would be pursued.
“They said whenever you feel good, come and give your statement,” one friend told The Indian Sun, expressing frustration that no action has been taken despite witness support.
The incident has sparked immediate anger among members of the South Asian community in Adelaide, with concerns that Singh’s case may not be properly followed up unless pressure is applied.
Singh’s supporters are calling for a written complaint to be lodged at the nearest police station—likely Hindley Street—to ensure the matter is formally recorded and escalated. They’re urging South Australia Police to investigate the matter seriously, given the alleged racial slurs and use of weapons.
At the time of writing, Singh remains in hospital. His current condition is unknown.
Kintore Avenue, located in the city’s central precinct and not far from the University of Adelaide and key cultural institutions, is normally a well-lit, heavily trafficked area. The presence of CCTV cameras in the vicinity raises hope that visual evidence may help identify the attackers.
A request for comment has been sent to South Australia Police.
Anyone with information about the incident or who witnessed the assault is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report anonymously at www.crimestopperssa.com.au
