More homes are set to be delivered close to public transport in South Melbourne, with the approval of a new development providing housing for hundreds of Victorians.

Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny today announced the green light for more than 240 new homes on Dorcas Street in South Melbourne, conveniently located near the soon-to-open Anzac Station, part of the Metro Tunnel project.

The 20-storey Time & Place development will feature a mix of studio, one-, two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes, alongside retail space, offering residents easy access to transport, jobs, and essential services.

Fast-tracked through the Development Facilitation Program, this project aligns with the strategy to build more homes in locations where Victorians want to live—close to transport, jobs, schools, and other services.

Major infrastructure projects like the Metro Tunnel and Suburban Rail Loop are unlocking opportunities to deliver thousands of homes in well-connected areas.

Since the release of the Housing Statement, the Minister for Planning has approved more than 15,000 homes, representing a significant increase compared to previous periods.

Bold housing reforms introduced last year aim to encourage development near train and tram stations, ensure infrastructure keeps pace with housing growth, and reduce stamp duty for off-the-plan apartments, units, and townhouses.

According to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data, Victoria leads the nation in housing construction, consistently approving and completing more homes than New South Wales and Queensland.

Kilkenny said, “We’ve fast-tracked more homes in the heart of South Melbourne to ensure hundreds more Victorians can live around the corner from the brand-new Anzac Station as well as trams, the Botanical Gardens, schools, shops and services.

“We know more Victorians want the choice to live close to public transport and projects like the Metro Tunnel and the Suburban Rail Loop are helping deliver just that—enabling thousands more homes to be built in areas well-connected to public transport.”
