Melbourne came alive with youthful exuberance as Yuva Diwas unfolded at the Performing Arts Centre in Glenroy College. Marking the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, the event on 12 January 2025 brought together a vibrant mix of culture, creativity, and community spirit. Organised by the Vivekananda Society of Australia and supported by Indian organisations, the celebration honoured the timeless legacy of Swami Vivekananda while spotlighting the contributions of young Australians.
A host of dignitaries, including Consul General of India in Melbourne Dr Sushil Kumar and Victorian MPs Iwan Walters and Evan Mulholland, lent their presence to the occasion. The gathering became a lively stage for the talents and ideas of the youth, all while celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Indian diaspora.
Performances and activities throughout the evening reflected Swami Vivekananda’s teachings, combining inspiration with entertainment. Among the highlights was the prestigious Youth of the Year 2024 Award, recognising young achievers aged 10 to 25 for their community contributions. An Under 15 Competition showcased an eclectic array of talent, from dance and music to skits and speeches exploring the theme “Balancing traditional values with Aussie lifestyle.” Adding a sprinkle of fun, the Under 10 Fancy Dress Competition captivated the audience with imaginative and endearing character portrayals.
Cultural performances and a festive dinner brought a sense of togetherness, offering attendees an opportunity to connect and celebrate unity. It was a testament to how Swami Vivekananda’s ideals can inspire inclusiveness and resilience among generations.
Yogesh Bhatt, who spearheaded the event, earned widespread praise for the dedication and effort of his team. The gathering served as a reminder of how cultural initiatives can bring harmony to a diverse society and instil shared values.

We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution.
