Harleen, a nurse from India, embarked on a life-changing journey when she moved to Australia in 2022, determined to build on her nursing career. Armed with years of experience, she expected a smooth transition into the Australian healthcare system. However, she quickly discovered that local qualifications were crucial to securing the right role.

Facing financial constraints and unsure of her options, Harleen stumbled upon Fee-Free TAFE through the Canberra Institute of Technology. This initiative turned out to be her ticket to an Australian qualification without the burden of hefty fees. Enrolling in a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance, Harleen immersed herself in the course, which she credits for bridging the gap between her prior experience and the demands of Australian healthcare.

By 2024, she completed her qualification and secured a role as an Assistant in Nursing at a local hospital—the very same hospital where she undertook her TAFE placement. The practical training and hands-on experience gave her the confidence to hit the ground running.

Speaking about her journey, Harleen highlighted the crucial support she received along the way. The student services team not only walked her through the eligibility requirements but also ensured she understood her options. The guidance and encouragement from her teachers, many of whom are practising registered nurses, were equally impactful.

Harleen shared how her work placement on the neuro and rehab unit transformed her expectations. Initially, she assumed she’d be completing small, routine tasks. Instead, she was entrusted with patient care responsibilities, supported by a structured environment that fostered learning and collaboration.

Beyond just financial savings, Fee-Free TAFE offered Harleen a new lease on her career. The program provided her with industry-recognised skills, helping her transition smoothly into a healthcare role in Australia.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
