The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), which began on 8 January in Bhubaneswar, has turned into a grand confluence of cultural pride, business prospects, and diaspora connections. Kicking off with the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, the event has already witnessed dynamic sessions, cultural showcases, and discussions that underline Odisha’s growing global significance.

On 8 January, a joint business session led by External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar and Odisha’s Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasised the state’s potential as a thriving hub for investment, technology, and tourism. Business leaders from the Indian diaspora, particularly those from Odisha, discussed avenues to expand the state’s global footprint, focusing on collaborations that strengthen ties between India and its diaspora. The Chief Minister highlighted Odisha’s strategic vision for leveraging its resources and cultural heritage to attract international partnerships.

On the cultural front, the Odisha Dance Academy, under Guru Aruna Mohanty, captivated audiences with an exquisite performance of classical Odissi dance. Their graceful movements and evocative storytelling offered a vivid portrayal of ancient Indian epics, resonating deeply with the international delegates. Since its establishment in 1975, the academy has been at the forefront of promoting Odissi dance globally, and their performance at the PBD underscored the state’s dedication to preserving and sharing its artistic traditions.

The convention has seamlessly blended cultural and business diplomacy, with other highlights including the Raja Rani Music Festival and Mukteswar Dance Festival. These events have provided delegates with an immersive experience of Odisha’s cultural richness, alongside opportunities for meaningful dialogue on investment and innovation.

As the PBD continues, Odisha stands out as a destination for opportunity and tradition, reinforcing its role in strengthening India’s global connections. With sessions, awards, and cultural events still to come, the convention promises to deepen the bonds between India and its vibrant diaspora.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
