Dr Sushil Kumar, the Consul General of India in Melbourne, visited the University of Melbourne’s Dookie Campus to strengthen collaborations in agriculture, horticulture, veterinary, and food sciences. The discussions with Campus Director Ms Ros Gall and faculty members focused on enhancing research and educational links between Indian institutions and the university.

During his visit, Dr Kumar also met with Indian PhD students, who are pursuing advanced research at Dookie. The exchange underscored the critical role of international cooperation in fostering academic excellence and tackling global challenges such as food security.

The University of Melbourne has long partnered with Indian institutions through initiatives like the Melbourne India Postgraduate Academy (MIPA). This programme, involving top-tier Indian universities such as IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, and IISc Bangalore, allows PhD candidates to engage in joint research across both nations. These collaborations ensure students benefit from the expertise and resources of leading institutions in India and Australia.

Dr Kumar’s visit highlighted the shared commitment to addressing pressing global issues through education and innovation. The engagement with Indian students on campus further reflected the focus on fostering a supportive and inclusive academic environment. The partnership’s emphasis on agriculture and food sciences has the potential to contribute to sustainable farming practices and improved food systems worldwide.

This visit not only celebrated the successes of existing partnerships but also laid the groundwork for deeper connections that could drive meaningful progress in the years ahead.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
