W
estern Australians may be sitting on untapped funds, with over $170 million of unclaimed money currently listed on the WA Register of Unclaimed Money. This growing pool of funds includes forgotten dividend payments, rental bond refunds, overpaid utility bills, and other financial oversights.
Recent updates have added 147,000 new records to the register, bringing the total number of entries to over 1.2 million. Among the notable additions are individual unclaimed amounts as high as $185,000 and $165,000, highlighting the potential for significant surprises awaiting rightful claimants.
The unclaimed funds originate from various WA-based organisations that, despite their efforts, have been unable to reconnect these sums with their rightful owners. The reasons behind these forgotten finances vary but commonly stem from outdated contact information, changes in personal circumstances, or simple oversight.
Last financial year alone, more than $2 million was successfully returned to Western Australians, illustrating the effectiveness of the system in reconnecting people with their money. For many, these unexpected windfalls provide a welcome financial boost and an incentive to check if they too have a claim.
Accessing the register is straightforward. Residents can search online through the Treasury website or use the ServiceWA app, making the process both accessible and user-friendly. The platform’s simplicity ensures that people from all walks of life can quickly determine if they are entitled to any unclaimed funds.
Treasurer Rita Saffioti has encouraged residents to take a few moments to check the register. As she pointed out, many Western Australians may be unaware of money owed to them. The process is free of charge, and, importantly, there is no time limit for claiming funds. This ensures that even long-forgotten sums remain accessible, providing a measure of reassurance to potential claimants.
The register continues to grow, underscoring its importance as a tool for financial reconnection. Whether it’s a modest amount or a significant sum, the prospect of reclaiming lost money serves as a reminder to residents to remain vigilant about their financial records. With no cost or deadline attached, there’s no reason not to take a closer look.
For Western Australians, the opportunity to uncover hidden funds is just a few clicks away. By visiting the Treasury website or using the ServiceWA app, they can quickly determine if they have money waiting to be returned to them, ensuring that forgotten finances don’t remain out of reach.
