The Indian government is rolling out the royal carpet for Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) with the Pravasi Bharatiya Express, a specially curated 17-day train journey aimed at reconnecting the Indian diaspora with their cultural heritage. Scheduled to commence on 9 January 2025 from Delhi’s Safdarjung Railway Station, this once-in-a-lifetime expedition offers PIOs aged 45 to 65 a chance to explore 17 iconic destinations across India.
This ambitious initiative, part of the Pravasi Teerth Darshan Yojana, is a collaboration between the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). The itinerary spans a treasure trove of destinations, including Ayodhya, Varanasi, Rameshwaram, Mahabalipuram, and Agra, weaving together history, spirituality, and architecture into a seamless cultural experience.
The tour promises a smooth and comfortable ride aboard a modern train outfitted with state-of-the-art amenities. Participants can expect guided tours, luxury hotel stays, all meals, air-conditioned coaches, and even entry fees to monuments—all included in the package. A dedicated tour manager ensures that every step of the journey is handled with care.
What truly sets this initiative apart is the generous support provided by the Indian government. The entire cost of the tour, covering accommodation, meals, and travel within India, is fully funded. Additionally, 90% of the return airfare from participants’ countries of residence to India is covered, leaving PIOs responsible for just 10% of their ticket price. For example, a return flight from Melbourne to Delhi costing $1,800 would require only a $180 contribution from the participant.
Participants are encouraged to prepare carefully for the tour. Essential travel tips include consulting with a healthcare provider regarding vaccinations, packing appropriate clothing for the diverse climates on the itinerary, and brushing up on local customs for a more enriching experience.
While the tour offers unparalleled value, participants should budget for additional personal expenses such as souvenirs or optional activities. A prudent estimate for miscellaneous costs ranges between $200 and $500, and visa costs, if applicable, add an extra $150–$200 to the total outlay.
For a cultural and spiritual immersion at a fraction of the usual cost, the Pravasi Bharatiya Express is a golden ticket to rediscovering your roots. With every detail meticulously planned, this journey promises not only an exploration of India’s heritage but also an enduring connection to the motherland.
Applications for Australian PIOs, particularly those from Victoria and Tasmania, are open until 1 December 2024. Interested individuals can submit their details to cons6.melbourne@mea.gov.in to secure their spot on this unforgettable journey.
