City of Parramatta wins big at prestigious Australian HR Awards

City of Parramatta has made a resounding mark in workplace innovation by securing two top honours at the 2024 Australian HR Awards in Sydney. The council’s transformative People Connect HR system took home the award for Best Use of Technology, while its 2023 Health and Wellbeing Action Plan claimed the title for Best Health and Wellbeing Program.

These wins highlight Parramatta’s forward-thinking and people-centric approach to employee experience. By revamping its HR systems and prioritising staff wellbeing, the council demonstrated a commitment to creating a supportive and productive work environment.

Gail Connolly PSM, Chief Executive of City of Parramatta, expressed her pride in the achievements, emphasising the dedication of the council’s people and culture team. “We aim to be an employer of choice, fostering an environment where staff feel valued, supported, and empowered,” she said. “It’s about creating a positive space where employees can thrive, contributing to both their personal development and the overall success of our city.”

The People Connect HR system overhaul marked a significant upgrade in how staff interact with human resources. The new cloud-based platform, designed to simplify tasks such as hiring and performance management, has been widely embraced by employees, with nearly two-thirds of staff praising its ease of use. The system’s success in improving the overall employee experience was a key factor in its recognition at the awards.

Equally impressive was the Health and Wellbeing Action Plan, which introduced innovative programmes alongside traditional approaches to prioritise mental, physical, and social health. The council’s focus on holistic employee support has already seen measurable results, including a notable drop in staff turnover from 18% to 12%—well below the local government average.

These latest accolades build on City of Parramatta’s continued success in the HR space, following previous wins in Diversity and Inclusion. The council’s commitment to its people is not only reflected in these awards but in the tangible benefits experienced by its workforce.

Parramatta’s people-first philosophy is setting new standards in the workplace, and this double win solidifies its reputation as a leader in HR excellence.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.
