The 2024 WasteSorted Awards have shone a spotlight on the innovative efforts driving Western Australia’s commitment to a low-waste future. Held as part of the annual Waste and Resource Recovery Conference, the awards recognise individuals, businesses, and organisations that are pushing the boundaries of recycling and waste reduction.
This year’s event highlighted 40 finalists across 10 categories, celebrating those who are making landfill the last resort by embracing strategies to avoid, reuse, repair, and recycle waste. The diverse range of winners showcases the state’s dedication to fostering a more circular economy and protecting the environment.
Among the notable winners, the City of Kwinana received the Community Engagement Award for its proactive approach to collecting data on recycling perceptions and educating residents. The Denmark Tip Shop was honoured with the Waste Champion Team Award for its efforts in promoting reuse and upcycling in the Great Southern region. Perth Chemical Specialists won the Small Business Award for their pioneering chemical innovation in treating ammonium nitrate emulsion waste. Meanwhile, Uluu took home the Innovation Award for developing a plastic alternative from fermented seaweed, aiming to reduce plastic waste.
Environment Minister Reece Whitby praised the winners for their contributions, emphasising that each serves as an example of WA’s progress towards sustainability. “A circular economy provides social and economic benefits by increasing employment opportunities and encouraging community action,” Whitby said. “These awards are a positive way to recognise and celebrate the great work being done by those committed to reducing waste and protecting the environment.”
The awards also recognised other exceptional initiatives, including:
- Community Waste Award: Incredible Edible Broome
