Launceston General Hospital (LGH) has unveiled cutting-edge CT scanning facilities in its Emergency Department, a significant upgrade designed to enhance diagnostic speed and accuracy for Tasmanians in the North. This development marks a crucial step in a broader initiative to modernise the hospital’s infrastructure and improve patient care.
The $2.6 million investment introduces a state-of-the-art CT scanner, with a second high-tech machine scheduled to become operational in October. This addition will replace the hospital’s existing single scanner, expanding diagnostic capabilities and supporting the hospital’s busy Emergency Department.
Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Guy Barnett, praised the project as a major boost for Northern Tasmania’s healthcare system. “This is a big win for patients in Northern Tasmania and reflects our ongoing commitment to enhancing health infrastructure,” Barnett commented. He highlighted the significance of CT scans in modern healthcare, noting their critical role in diagnosing conditions ranging from cancer and heart disease to fractures.
The new CT scanners offer several advantages over previous technology. With the fastest scanning speed available on the market, the new machines will reduce both diagnosis and scan times, leading to enhanced image quality and better patient outcomes. The two scanners will be strategically utilised: one will be dedicated to emergency cases, while the other will cater to the broader needs of the hospital.
Barnett also outlined how this upgrade fits into the Tasmanian Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future. The plan includes significant investments in health infrastructure, such as the $120 million Northern Heart Centre and an ambitious project to nearly double the size of the Emergency Department. “We’re building a better health system by investing in advanced equipment and critical infrastructure,” he said.
Additionally, the government has been proactive in expanding the healthcare workforce, recently welcoming 720 new healthcare professionals, including 194 nurses, as part of a national recruitment drive.
The new CT scanners are a key element of the LGH Masterplan, which envisions a comprehensive transformation of the hospital’s Emergency Department and Acute Care Zone. The Masterplan is aimed at ensuring the LGH can meet future healthcare demands and provide top-quality care to the community.
As these advancements take shape, the LGH is poised to offer even more efficient and effective diagnostic services. The arrival of the new scanners is not just a technical upgrade but a step towards a more responsive and capable healthcare system for Northern Tasmania.
