In a historic celebration of diversity and unity, more than 22,200 individuals from over 150 nations are poised to embrace Australian citizenship in more than 430 citizenship ceremonies taking place across the country as part of the Australia Day 2024 festivities.

A significant number among the new citizens include over 3,600 individuals from New Zealand, many of whom have successfully utilised the direct pathway to citizenship for New Zealanders introduced by the Albanese Labor Government last year.

Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, and Multicultural Affairs, Andrew Giles, will play an integral role in these citizenship ceremonies, attending events hosted by local government councils and the prestigious National Citizenship and Flag Raising Ceremony held on the picturesque shores of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra.

The year 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of Australian citizenship, with a remarkable milestone of over 6 million people from more than 200 nations becoming Australian citizens during this time.

In a statement, Minister Andrew Giles expressed his heartfelt congratulations to the newest members of the Australian community, acknowledging their commitment to joining the vibrant multicultural nation. He highlighted the significance of Australia Day, where thousands of individuals are choosing to become citizens of a country cherished by First Nations peoples for more than 60,000 years.

Minister Giles emphasised, “We welcome every new citizen who helps to build Australia into a strong, united, and prosperous nation. Their pledge is a formal commitment to Australia and our shared values, as well as the privileges, rights, and responsibilities that come with being Australian.”

As the ceremonies unfold nationwide, Australia celebrates the rich tapestry of cultures that contribute to its unique identity, fostering a sense of belonging and unity among its citizens. This Australia Day, the nation takes pride in embracing diversity and welcoming over 22,200 individuals into the Australian community, Giles added.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
