Brisbane is set to welcome a significant addition to its infrastructure with the official naming of the Breakfast Creek Green Bridge. This event marks a key moment in the Schrinner Council’s city-shaping program and will be celebrated at a community day on Saturday, 27 January.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has extended an invitation to local residents to join the festivities at the Breakfast Creek Green Bridge Community Day. This event symbolises a pivotal step forward for active travel in the city. Schrinner emphasized the council’s commitment to enhancing Brisbane’s connectivity, noting the parallel advancements in road infrastructure such as the Moggill Road Corridor Upgrade and the Beam Road project.

The green bridge initiative aligns with the rising popularity of active travel among Brisbane residents. Statistics show over 2300 pedestrians and cyclists daily using the nearby Lores Bonney Riverwalk. The new bridge is expected to further bolster Brisbane’s reputation as a walkable city.

Hamilton Ward Councillor Julia Dixon highlighted the community’s enthusiasm for the bridge, which promises safer and more convenient access for walkers, cyclists, and scooter riders. This bridge not only enhances connectivity to Newstead Park and the CBD but also reflects Brisbane’s growth and its commitment to accessible urban mobility.

The project encompasses approximately 700 meters of new and improved walking and cycling paths, including an extension to the Lores Bonney Riverwalk and a new cycle path from Newstead Park to Newstead Terrace. With over 70,000 work hours contributed by around 600 local workers, the bridge is a testament to local craftsmanship and labour.

The community day at Newstead Park, featuring food trucks, live music, and activities, also promises an exclusive “sneak peek” of the bridge before its official opening. The event will include special appearances by popular characters Bluey and Bingo, adding a festive touch to the occasion.

Looking ahead, Brisbane residents can anticipate the opening of the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge later this year, another significant stride in the city’s green bridge program. This bridge, expected to reduce annual vehicle traffic and become a new city landmark, will include unique features like an above-water restaurant and bar.

The Schrinner Council’s ten-year green bridge building program aims to deliver more such structures, with hopes for state and federal support, recognizing these bridges as priority projects by Infrastructure Australia.
