Viv Nguyen, Chairperson of the Victorian Multicultural Commission, recently highlighted the importance of tackling gender-based violence and fostering an inclusive society in her editorial. She underscored the commencement of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign that focuses on confronting and preventing violence against women and girls. In Australia, this issue is particularly pressing for women from refugee or migrant backgrounds, with one in three experiencing domestic and family violence, a rate that increases for women on temporary visas. Nguyen emphasises the necessity of addressing racism and discrimination that often stem from myths and misconceptions about cultural differences.

“To stop this violence, we must create an inclusive and gender-equal society,” Nguyen stated, urging individuals to educate themselves about the signs of gender-based violence to better support women in their communities. She recommends visiting Respect Victoria for resources available in various languages.

In addition to this, Nguyen expressed her honour in reflecting on the fundamental principles that define our shared humanity during the upcoming Human Rights Week in Victoria. The week will be marked by a special panel discussion organised by IPAA Victoria, the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, and Diversity Council Australia. The discussion, titled ‘Creating Safe Spaces for Staff in Troubling Times – Human Rights, Leadership, and Workplace Culture’, is set to explore the role of human rights in leadership and workplace culture. This free event will be held on Thursday, 7 December, from 12.00 to 1.30 pm.

Furthermore, the Victorian Multicultural Commission, in collaboration with the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission and other commissions, is working to promote more inclusive and respectful practices in Victoria. Nguyen encourages participation in activities and dialogues about human rights available on the VEOHRC website.

Nguyen also addressed the impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East on Victorians of Jewish, Muslim, and Palestinian backgrounds, acknowledging their grief and anxiety. She reiterated a strong condemnation of antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of racism, hate, and vilification, vital for protecting the multicultural and multifaith fabric of the society.

Appreciation was also extended to those who continue to support each other compassionately during these challenging times. “Together, we can ensure that everyone feels safe and secure, where everyone feels that they belong and are accepted, and where everyone feels respected,” Nguyen remarked.

Nguyen’s call to action reflects a commitment to creating a future where safety and respect are paramount, transcending background, beliefs, and gender. It’s a vision of a united society, where everyone can thrive in an environment of safety, acceptance, and respect.
