A legacy mural to commemorate the 2022 T20 World Cup taking place here in Australia later this year has just been unveiled in Geelong.

“The artwork is inspired by the idea that cricket is a game that branches out and brings countries and people together from many global communities. It depicts a ‘trophy tree’  with its root in Geelong (where the tournament kicks off on October 16th) and the nations competing as the active branches helping keep this sport alive,” says Vernon Tissera, the man behind the artwork.

“It also somewhat reflects the multicultural landscape of Australia and how we are a country of many different cultures coming together, and how sport is a conduit of bringing everyone together,” he adds.

The mural was unveiled on Saturday at Kardinia Stadium, Geelong, to help mark the 50 days countdown until the start of the World Cup.

Sri Lanka born Tissera says the idea about getting a mural done came from Aaron Wharton, the Community Engagement Lead for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. “He got in touch with me and said that they wanted to create a mural that would commemorate the T20 World Cup, given it’s the first time Australia will host the tournament.”

Further, Geelong was discussed as this was the first time the ground would be used for games in such a tournament. It is also where the tournament will begin with some of the initial qualifying matches to be played there, he says.

“Further discussion with a few other members of the ICC, and the Kardinia Park Trust (who are in charge of the stadium) led to different mural design ideas. The selected design was chosen as it signed a key message about inclusivity about the sport namely, about how the sport helps bring communities together,” adds Tissera, an artist and graphic designer based in Melbourne.

Tissera says the whole process took about a month, with the artwork taking roughly seven  days to complete.

The mural is now completed as a legacy piece for this tournament and is situated in Kardinia Park, GMHBA Stadium, where the Geelong AFL matches are played.

Tissera is grateful to the Kardinia Park Trust and the ICC for the initial idea, support and opportunity in allowing him to add his vision and story to the much awaited ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
