The Victorian Government is calling for applications to be the next chair of Victoria’s Shrine of Remembrance. This is an exciting opportunity to lead the strategic direction of the Shrine—also known as Victoria’s National War Memorial—which honours the service and sacrifice of Victorians and Australians in war, conflict and peacekeeping.
The call for applications comes as current chair Chris Spence looks to retire at the conclusion of his term early next year.
He has been in the role since 2012.
Under the Shrine of Remembrance Act 1978 (the Act), the chair must have engaged in service or duty as an officer or a member of the naval, military or air forces.
Ten trustees, including the chair and a deputy chair, serve on the Shrine’s Board. Collectively they are responsible for the care, maintenance and preservation of the Shrine and its surrounding reserve land in Melbourne’s innersouth. Building upon itsfunction as a memorial, the Shrine offersschool and community education and learning programs, holds over 200 commemorative ceremonies each year, and attracts more than 750,000 visitors annually from across the world.
“I thank Air Vice-Marshal Chris Spence for all his work as the chair over the past eight years—he’s been a tireless advocate for veterans and in helping preserve their stories and legacy for generations to come,” said Minister for Veterans Shaun Leane.
“Veterans represent a broad cross section of cultures, ages, genders and walks of life—and with that in mind, we encourage ex-service men and women from all backgrounds to consider applying for the role as chair.”
