Young people in Wyndham are being encouraged to participate in Wyndham’s Way Out West Youth Photography competition and exhibition
Wyndham City’s Libraries and Youth Services are running the annual youth photography competition, with entries open until 17 May.
Cr Tony Hooper said the competition was open to all young people aged between 12 and 25-years-old who live, work, study or visit Wyndham.
“As someone who has a background in filmmaking, I love photography, especially when it tells a story,” Wyndham City’s Arts, Culture and Heritage portfolio holder Cr Tony Hooper said. “I’m so excited to see what young people in Wyndham can create with their cameras, and I encourage everyone to take part in this great competition. Who knows, it could even lead to a career in photography.”
The Way Out West Photography Competition includes a number of different categories including life in Wyndham, landscape, black and white, colour, the funniest photograph and of course, the overall winner based on content and artistic merit.
Winners will be announced at a special exhibition opening held on 20th June, 2019 at the Point Cook Library. The exhibition will feature the work of the shortlisted entrants and will travel to all of Wyndham’s libraries, the Youth Resource Centre and the Civic Centre.
Cr Hooper said this was a great way for budding photographers to work on their craft and even gain recognition for the creativity.
“Photography continues to grow in popularity and this is a great opportunity for both talented and novice photographers to capture some of Wyndham’s unique appeal,” Cr Hooper said.
“There’s plenty of prizes up for grabs including $500 for the overall winner.”
Portfolio holder for Learning City Cr Josh Gilligan said the competition also provided a great opportunity for our youth to both showcase and improve their creative skills.
“Free photography workshops are being held throughout Wyndham in the lead up to the exhibition so there’s great opportunity to either learn a new skill or fine tune what you already know,” Cr Gilligan said.

Support Independent Community Journalism
Dear Reader,The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.
We operate independently.
Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.
When you support The Indian Sun, you support:
• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers
We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.
If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.
Please consider making a contribution today.
Thank you for your support.
