Uber puts driver partners in front seat with new tech features

Flex Pay allows partners to get paid quicker; Caltex tie-up offers discounts of up to 8 cents a litre

On 6 June Uber announced a range of new product features and partnerships to help driver-partners reduce on-road costs, get paid when they need and enhance the flexibility of driving.

Uber Australia and New Zealand Head of Operations, Mike Abbott, said, “These improvements are the result of feedback sessions, research and testing with drivers which provide valuable input to make driving on the Uber app a more rewarding experience.”

The technology and services provided to drivers continues to evolve, said Mr Abbott, as the ride sharing community grows. ”Today ride sharing empowers 60,000 Australians, across 17 cities, with the opportunity to access extra work whenever they want, and extra money whenever they need it,” he added.

“While everyone drives for a different reason, they share a common desire to earn some extra money in a way that fits around their life, rather than the other way around,” said Mr Abbott.

As the cost of petrol continues to rise, almost nine out of ten drivers have told us they want help to reduce their biggest operating cost in fuel.

Riders can update their pickup location after they’ve requested if they happened to request from the wrong place, reducing stress and cancellations for drivers

That’s why we’re excited to announce a partnership with Caltex offering discounts of up to 8 cents a litre simply for driving with Uber.

The Momentum loyalty program, Uber is now helping drivers collectively save more than $25 million on their operating costs each year. This means a driver-partner who drives 15 hours a week, can expect to save up to $482 a year.

With the introduction of Flex Pay drivers don’t have to wait a week to get paid if an unexpected bill pops up. They can simply request a payout whenever it suits them, and the money will be in their nominated bank account the next day.

We’re improving Driver Destinations to enable partners to get the most out of their time on the road. If driver-partners need to be somewhere by a certain time, they can now select when they want to arrive at their destination, and they’ll only be matched with riders who’ll get them where they need to go on time.

With Driver Profiles partners can choose to share conversation starters with riders, such as where they grew up, their favourite places in the city and fun facts. Riders can also send drivers compliments, which will show up on the driver’s home screen.

Uber’s new anonymous in-app chat platform, Intercom, will offer a translation service for riders and drivers with different first languages; VOIP calls; and the ability to share dynamic information, like pin locations and maps.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
