Australian Immi App streamlines visa steps for travellers

The process for applying for an Australian visa has been given a practical upgrade with the expansion of the Australian Immi App, which is now available in 34 countries. The mobile tool allows eligible applicants to complete key biometric steps on their smartphones, cutting down on costs and easing the time spent navigating identity checks.

The Department of Home Affairs says the app has been designed for people who have already supplied their biometrics to the department and hold a valid passport. Those who meet the criteria can use their phones to upload a facial image and passport details instead of visiting an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre.

According to the department, the app can be downloaded from both the Apple Store and Google Play. Applicants will need a steady internet connection and must enable camera access, NFC capability and location services. Once the app is installed, users follow a guided process to verify their identity.

The first step is to provide the Visa Lodgement Number, which can be scanned from the barcode on the biometric request letter or entered manually. Each family member has their own number, so the department stresses the importance of checking that the right code is used for each applicant.

The next stage involves scanning the passport’s data page. The app uses a red outline to guide positioning and switches to green once the document is captured correctly. For passports fitted with a chip, applicants then place their phone directly on the cover until the app completes the electronic reading.

After the scan, the app displays the captured passport information for confirmation. If any detail does not match the physical document, the instructions tell applicants to repeat the scan until it aligns.

The department says the app has been introduced to make the process more accessible for applicants by reducing the time and travel needed for routine checks. As it continues rolling out across more countries, the tool is expected to become a regular part of the visa process for travellers who meet the eligibility requirements.
