Cairns will be awash with light, sound and celebration when the community gathers for Diwali on Saturday, 18 October at Fogarty Park.

Presented by Cairns Hindu Samaj, this year’s Festival of Lights will be staged on a larger scale than ever before, with thousands expected to join a full day of cultural performances, food, shopping and family entertainment. The celebrations will run from 11 am to 9 pm, culminating in a fireworks finale.

Diwali is one of the most important events in the Hindu calendar, marking the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. Organisers say the Cairns celebration is designed to reflect that spirit while welcoming people of all backgrounds to take part.

“Presented by Cairns Hindu Samaj, this year’s festival will be held on a grand scale for the first time, welcoming thousands of people to enjoy a day filled with music, dance, food, and family fun,” the organisers said.

Attendees can expect a wide range of attractions. Food stalls will serve authentic Indian cuisine alongside sweets, snacks and drinks. Live entertainment will feature both traditional and modern music and dance, while market stalls will offer crafts, festive shopping and henna. Children’s activities are planned throughout the day, creating an atmosphere for families to enjoy together.

“Come experience the magic of Diwali with food, fun, and festive cheer—everyone is welcome,” organisers added.

The Cairns Hindu Samaj says the festival is an invitation for the whole community to experience the joy of Diwali. The event highlights the cultural diversity of the region, while giving families and friends a chance to celebrate together in one of the city’s most popular outdoor spaces.

Tickets for Diwali Mela 2025 are available through Just Easy Book. The organisers expect Fogarty Park on the Esplanade to transform into a lively hub of lights, colour and community spirit, with the fireworks display closing the evening’s celebrations.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.
