Casuarina MLA Khoda Patel will lead a community clean-up of Casuarina Beach on Sunday, 27 July, inviting residents to join his team in helping to keep the area clean and well-maintained.
The clean-up will begin at 9am, with volunteers asked to meet at the Daribah Road car park within the Casuarina Coastal Reserve. Gloves, bags and a limited number of rubbish collectors will be provided. After the clean-up, participants are invited to a coffee catch-up at De La Plage café in Nightcliff.
Mr Patel wrote, “My team and I will be at Casuarina Beach tomorrow for a community clean-up, and we’d love for you to join us in helping to keep our coastline clean and beautiful.”
The event takes place within the Casuarina Coastal Reserve, a 1,500-hectare protected area featuring beaches, mangroves and monsoonal forest. The reserve is ecologically and culturally important, home to migratory shorebirds, turtle nesting sites and sacred Larrakia sites such as Dariba Nunggalinya (Old Man Rock).
Casuarina Beach was recognised as one of Australia’s top 10 beaches in 2024, but local environmental groups continue to raise concerns about the impact of litter and marine debris. The clean-up event reflects growing calls for community-based action to protect the area’s natural features.
Volunteers are advised to bring sun protection, wear appropriate footwear, and stay on marked paths. Although box jellyfish are uncommon in July, and crocodile sightings are rare, participants are encouraged to follow safety instructions from organisers at the event.

Dear Reader,The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. With platforms such as YouTube videos, we have been able to engage in different forms of storytelling. However, the past few years, like many media organisations around the world, it has not been an easy path. We have a greater challenge. We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution. Do make a DONATION NOW so we can continue with the volume and quality journalism that we are able to practice.
Thank you for your support.
Best wishes,
Team The Indian Sun
