In a moment of profound loss, former Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of reform and statesmanship that shaped modern India. Tributes are pouring in from around the world, with leaders acknowledging his contributions to India and his impact on the global stage.

On behalf of the Coalition, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton expressed his condolences to the people of India and Australians of Indian ancestry, recognising the grief felt by communities across both nations. “Dr Singh was a visionary leader whose reforms and policies transformed India’s economic landscape,” Dutton said, adding that his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

Singh served as India’s 13th Prime Minister and remains one of the country’s longest-serving leaders. His tenure, spanning from 2004 to 2014, was marked by his calm demeanour, intellectual rigour, and unwavering commitment to economic reforms. Often referred to as the “architect of India’s economic liberalisation,” Singh spearheaded transformative policies that revitalised the Indian economy, lifting millions out of poverty and propelling the nation onto the global stage.

Current Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as one of India’s “most distinguished leaders,” a testament to the deep respect Singh commanded across political divides.

A soft-spoken scholar, Singh epitomised the vision of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who had famously said that the future of the nation would be one of “incessant striving.”

Singh’s remarkable journey began in the small village of Gah, now in Pakistan. A brilliant economist, he earned his PhD from the University of Oxford and held key positions in international organisations like the World Bank. Before becoming Prime Minister, he served as India’s Finance Minister, where he was instrumental in liberalising the economy in 1991, a pivotal moment in the nation’s history.

Beyond his professional achievements, Singh was a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and their three daughters. The family now mourns the loss of a beloved husband and father.

As the world reflects on the life and legacy of Dr Manmohan Singh, his contributions to India’s progress and his influence on global economic thought will endure. His life and work remain a source of inspiration, exemplifying the power of visionary leadership and tireless dedication.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.
