Western Australia is gearing up for a significant boost in clean energy with a major milestone achieved at the Oakajee Strategic Industrial Area (SIA). The Cook Labor Government has awarded a $20 million contract to Highway Construction Pty Ltd for the construction of a new access road, a key development for turning Oakajee into a leading clean energy hub.

The road project is set to kick off soon and will include a new intersection with the North West Coastal Highway, the first phase of the access road itself, and around four kilometres of highway widening. This infrastructure upgrade will enhance freight movement to and from the industrial area, making it more accessible and efficient. The upgrades are expected to be completed by late next year.

This development aligns with a promise made during the 2021 WA Labor election and marks a significant step in the vision to transform Oakajee from a greenfield site into a competitive global player in renewable energy. Located about 20km north of Geraldton, Oakajee is ideal for clean energy industries due to its exceptional wind and solar potential.

Premier Roger Cook highlighted the importance of the road project as part of a broader strategy to boost Western Australia’s clean energy sector. “Under my Government, Oakajee is set to become a major clean energy jobs precinct. The new access road, along with our $500 million Strategic Industries Fund and industrial lease incentive scheme, are turning the Oakajee vision into reality. This development will create thousands of long-term jobs for Geraldton, diversify the Mid West economy, and help WA establish itself as a leader in renewable energy,” Cook said.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti emphasised that this project is a crucial first step in the broader development of Oakajee. “The new road will not only enhance safety for heavy freight vehicles but also support the growth of emerging industries. Oakajee is one of 13 SIAs drawing significant investment, which will lead to substantial economic opportunities and job creation across Western Australia,” she noted.

Local MLA for Geraldton, Lara Dalton, also welcomed the news. “This milestone in the Cook Labor Government’s plan for Oakajee is crucial for developing our region into a clean energy hub. The investments being made now will bring thousands of jobs and foster a strong, long-term economy for Geraldton,” Dalton commented.

The $500 million Strategic Industries Fund, announced in the 2024-25 State Budget, will provide essential infrastructure to support the state’s 13 SIAs, while the $160 million industrial lease incentive scheme is designed to attract clean energy projects. Together, these initiatives aim to drive significant economic growth and job creation in the region.

With the access road contract awarded and work set to begin, the Oakajee SIA is well on its way to becoming a cornerstone of Western Australia’s renewable energy ambitions.
