Femina Miss India 2017 Sana Dua, ALP’s Manoj Kumar and John Berger, Liberal’s Aravind Putta, were among the thousands who joined the 48th Janmasthmi celebrations organised by the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) at Albert Park on Friday evening.

More than 25,000 people had turned up during the whole day at one of Australia’s oldest Hindu Temple to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna.

Bhakta Dasa Prabhu, Sukhdev Prabhu, Darpan Mittal, Reshma Singh and significant others from ISKCON did a fantastic job in managing the event with massive crowds, and also receiving and entertaining the prominent visitors to the temple.

Every visitor was served with free food and Prasad throughout the whole day, thanks to momentous effort of various kitchen volunteers and staff who made sure that serving of Prasad throughout the day was a smooth process.

As usual, the temple management led by President Aniruddha Dasa Prabhu, and his team of volunteers and devotees put in great effort to oull off yet another successful and massive Janmasthmi celebration.

Dua, who was crowned 1st runner up at Femina Miss India 2017 and also the First Miss India from Jammu and Kashmir, added the tinge of glamour to the event. Her goodwill visit to the temple was coordinated and organized courtesy of Nitin Gupta (Aussie expat and former ministerial adviser). She has been holidaying in Melbourne, visiting her family and friends.

There were various cultural performances throughout the day to keep the crowd entertained. Also present during the celebrations were Madhur Gupta (Manhari Metals), Dheepa Awtani (BSYQ), and various other prominent members of Victorian Indian community.

Udaipur Prince Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, South Indian actress Khushbu Sundar and Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, who have visited the temple in the recent past, also sent their good wishes for the event.

ISKCON is well known for providing nutritious food free of cost to various needy people in the community for many years. During the tough COVID times, various people in community relied on the ISKCON kitchen for their food requirements.

ISKCON is now gearing towards the 50th Anniversary celebrations in 2024, when major dignitaries from India, Australia, USA, and across the globe would be joining the landmark celebrations of one of Australia’s oldest Hindu temple.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
