Victorians will soon be able to tap on and travel across the state’s public transport network using a debit or credit card, smartphone or smart watch, with contactless payments expanding to myki-enabled buses from 26 July.
The rollout means passengers can use contactless payment methods anywhere myki is accepted on public transport, removing the need to top up or carry a physical myki card for many journeys. The change follows the introduction of contactless payments across Melbourne’s metropolitan train network and is part of the state’s ongoing upgrade of ticketing services.
The Victorian Government says the expansion is designed to make public transport easier to use for regular commuters, occasional travellers and visitors by offering more payment options across the network.
Passengers can continue using their physical myki cards if they prefer, while those choosing contactless payments will be able to tap on using eligible Visa, Mastercard or American Express cards, or digital wallets linked to those cards on compatible mobile devices and smart watches.
The rollout coincides with reduced public transport fares remaining in place across Victoria. Half-price fares will continue until 1 January 2027, with the discount applying to both full-fare and concession passengers.
Transport advocates have generally welcomed efforts to simplify ticketing, particularly for visitors and people who do not regularly use public transport. However, they have also noted that physical myki cards will still be needed in some situations, including for passengers who rely on concession or discounted travel products that are not yet supported through contactless payment.
The government has encouraged passengers to check how contactless ticketing works before travelling, particularly those switching from a myki card for the first time. Travellers are advised to use the same payment card or digital device throughout their journey to ensure fares are calculated correctly.
The latest expansion brings Victoria closer to a fully integrated contactless ticketing system across its public transport network, while maintaining existing payment options for passengers who prefer to continue using myki cards.
