Several of Melbourne’s best-known landmarks will be illuminated in purple tonight as Victoria marks National Police Legacy Day, an annual event recognising police officers who have died in the line of duty and the families they leave behind.
The colour purple reflects the Michaelmas Daisy, the symbol of National Police Legacy Day, which is observed across Australia to honour the service and sacrifice of police officers.
Among the buildings set to take part are Parliament House, the Old Treasury Building, Melbourne Town Hall, Federation Square and Arts Centre Melbourne.
The tribute also draws attention to the work of Victoria Police Legacy, a not-for-profit organisation that supports police families following the loss of a serving or retired officer. Its services include counselling, education assistance and wellbeing programs.
According to Victoria Police Legacy, the organisation supported 1,320 family members over the past year through a range of support and connection initiatives.
The annual day of recognition comes as police organisations around the country continue to highlight the impact that police service can have on families, particularly when officers are killed while carrying out their duties.
Minister for Police Anthony Carbines said the day was an opportunity to recognise both officers and the people who support them.
“No one understands the sacrifice behind keeping our community safe more than the families who live it every day,” he said.
“Today we honour our police and the families who stand with them, carrying their legacy, their strength, and their sacrifice.”
Supporters of the event say public displays such as landmark illuminations help ensure fallen officers are remembered and acknowledge the ongoing challenges faced by their families. Critics of commemorative campaigns have at times argued that remembrance events should be accompanied by broader conversations about policing and community safety, although National Police Legacy Day remains focused on honouring those who have died in service and supporting their families.
Tonight’s lighting of Melbourne landmarks is intended as a public show of remembrance and solidarity, with organisers saying the message is that the contribution of fallen officers, and the families who continue without them, will not be forgotten.
