Eastwood residents have gained a revamped community space with the official opening of the upgraded Somerville Park following a $4.7 million redevelopment funded by the NSW Government and City of Parramatta Council.
The project has delivered a range of new facilities, including a multipurpose sports half-court, a playground featuring the City of Parramatta’s first multi-tower play equipment, outdoor fitness stations and improved walking paths linking the park to nearby Pearl Avenue.
The upgrade is aimed at supporting recreation, exercise and community activities for residents of all ages in Eastwood and surrounding suburbs.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said the improvements would strengthen the park’s role as a community gathering place.
“Somerville Park has long been a local gem and these upgrades will make it an even better place for the community to play, exercise and spend time outdoors,” Cr Zaiter said.
“The new playground will be a favourite with kids, parents and carers of all ages, with the City’s first multi-tower play equipment to climb and have fun adventures.
“This project reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to improving local parks and public spaces across our City, with residents making the most of the recent upgrades to Sue Savage Reserve in Toongabbie and Shannons Paddock Playground in Westmead.
“We thank our community for their patience during the construction. This park will be a shared backyard that families, kids and local community groups can enjoy for many years to come.”
Alongside the new recreational facilities, the project included upgraded sports field lighting, improved accessible parking spaces, enhancements to the vegetated creek area, a new maintenance vehicle gate, improvements to the car park and refreshed line markings for the rugby and training fields.
State Member for Parramatta Donna Davis said the redevelopment would benefit a wide cross-section of the local community.
“Somerville Park has something for everyone. This green oasis on the edge of Eastwood has been given a much needed facelift so that locals of all ages have an even better space to stay active, connect with neighbours and enjoy the outdoors.”

The reopening adds to a series of recent park and playground improvements across the City of Parramatta, with councils and governments continuing to invest in public open spaces as communities seek greater access to outdoor recreation, fitness and family-friendly facilities.
