A
s part of my school’s Year 10 curriculum, students are given the opportunity to spend a week experiencing what it is like to be part of the workforce. I chose to complete my placement with The Indian Sun, a multicultural media organisation serving the Indian community in Australia. One of my assignments during the week was to meet with the Member of Parliament for Werribee, John Lister.

Lister is a public servant focused on improving the community in which he grew up. Before entering politics, he worked as a secondary school teacher in the Wyndham area, an experience that continues to shape his approach to leadership.

A strong advocate for accessible education, Lister believes every child should have access to a quality state school close to home.

“I’m a proud state school educator, and believe that every kid should be able to access the best education close to home,” Lister said. “I am working closely with school communities to upgrade their facilities and support programs in disability inclusion and academic enrichment.”

Lister’s background in education gives him an informed perspective on the needs of young people and schools across the electorate.

“I have been pushing for more spaces for young people to connect and feel supported. The Labor Government has funded an expanded youth centre in Manor Lakes, along with additional services in schools,” he said. “I’m also passionate about creating further opportunities for young people, which is why I’m proud to be part of a government that has protected the right to Free TAFE courses.”

Through his engagement with the community, Lister said public transport remains a major issue in the electorate. Residents have raised concerns about limited and unreliable train services, along with gaps in bus networks across Wyndham.

“I want public transport to be the first choice for people getting around Wyndham,” Lister said. “I have also championed increased capacity on the Wyndham Vale line, more services on the Werribee line, and a significant uplift in bus services across the electorate.”

Visiting Parliament House and interviewing an MP gave me a better understanding of how local issues are discussed in politics. The experience also showed me how journalism can help connect communities with decision-makers.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
