Australia has appointed Bernard Lynch as its next Consul-General in Kolkata, with the federal government pointing to growing economic and strategic ties with India as a key backdrop to the posting.

Announcing the appointment on 29 March, Foreign Minister Penny Wong said, “Australia’s partnership with India is stronger, deeper and more consequential than ever, underpinned by the connections between our peoples.”

She added that both countries continue to work closely across regional and strategic frameworks. “We are Comprehensive Strategic Partners and Quad partners with a shared vision for the Indo-Pacific region.”

The role in Kolkata comes at a time when Australia is seeking to expand trade and investment links across India’s eastern and northeastern states. Wong said, “We are broadening the economic, strategic and community ties between our two countries. Under A New Roadmap for Australia’s Economic Engagement with India, Australia is committed to growing and diversifying its economic relationship with India.”

Economic engagement in the region has been increasing, particularly in sectors linked to industry and workforce development. “Australia’s economic links with West Bengal and neighbouring states are substantial and expanding, particularly in Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) and skilling.”

The consulate in Kolkata covers a large and diverse jurisdiction, with responsibilities spanning eastern and northeastern India. The government noted, “The Australian Consulate-General in Kolkata advances Australia’s interests across eastern and northeastern India, including the states of West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Sikkim and Tripura.”

Mr Lynch brings experience from multiple diplomatic postings. Wong said, “Mr Lynch is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was most recently Australia’s Ambassador to Jordan. He has also previously served overseas in Saudi Arabia, Timor-Leste, Indonesia and Iran.”

The government also acknowledged the work of outgoing officials in Kolkata, stating, “I thank former Consul-General Mr Hugh Boylan and acting Consul-General Mr Kevin Goh for their contributions to advancing Australia’s interests in Kolkata.”

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.
