The Victorian Government will make all public transport free for one month from 31 March, as part of a temporary measure aimed at easing cost-of-living pressures linked to rising fuel prices.

The initiative, announced by Jacinta Allan and the Allan Labor Government, will apply to trains, trams and buses across both metropolitan and regional networks, including V/Line services, until the end of April.

Officials said the move is designed to reduce household transport costs and encourage a shift from private vehicles to public transport. The government expects the measure to also ease congestion by reducing the number of cars on the road.

“As Premier, I’m determined to do everything within my control to help Victorians deal with rising fuel prices,” Ms Allan said.

“This is a temporary measure to help with the cost of living – it will take pressure off the pump and help you save.”

Passengers will not be required to use their myki cards during the free period, with ticket gates left open across the network. Authorities confirmed that myki machines will not charge users who accidentally tap on.

Those holding myki passes will be able to pause their pass for a month or seek a refund by contacting the public transport call centre. For V/Line coach services operating outside the myki network, passengers will still need to book a free ticket to secure a seat, though train travel in these areas will not require a ticket.

The government has indicated that services are expected to be busier during the period. However, it said recent expansions to the public transport network and the addition of extra services have improved capacity to handle increased demand.

Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams said the measure would provide immediate relief to families facing higher fuel costs.

“Fuel prices are rising and Victorian families are feeling it – free public transport will make a real difference for all,” Ms Williams said.

“Our transport system can support this as a temporary measure, and it’s important to support Victorians right now.”

The government described the initiative as a short-term response, noting it will monitor the impact over the month while considering further measures to address ongoing cost pressures.

“This won’t solve every problem, but it’s an immediate step to help Victorians right now while we keep working on new solutions to make Victoria more affordable,” Ms Allan said.
